One of the less common of the range of Instantograph cameras made by J Lancaster and Sons this is the 1901 BB 1/4 plate version ( the BB acronym stood for Brass Bound). It is complete with the original Lancaster lens with built in iris which is in excellent condition, fully functional with clean clear undamaged lens. The range of settings for the lens/iris is marked as 10 - 30 and in time settings of 1 - 8 seconds - there was no actual shutter and the exposure was achieved by removing the lens cap (missing) for the given amount of time. It also has the original patented back assembly and is complete with a book style double dark slide holder - this is complete but has cosmetic issues of some corrosion of the clips. Although the camera is complete and in good condition there are a couple of cosmetic issues. The carrying strap is broken on one side and the front plaque that would show the Lancaster name is missing, also the bellows are a little misshapen where they join the front lens assembly as shown on the second picture. The extension of the base works well and the back extensions for parallax correction are in full working order. This is a splendid example of this popular Victorian camera which, with a little care and attention could be a really stunning specimen.
