This icon is the complete package—an extremely traditional style of icon with an exceedingly fine brass cover (oklad or riza). Note the elegant repoussé and chased metalwork on this icon. It is among the finest example of an Old Believer oklad that you will likely see anywhere—in a museum, cathedral, or at auction. St. Nicholas’ halo is particularly unusual—it actually covers the small images of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The halo may have been added after the original oklad was made, perhaps as a thank you to St. Nicholas after someone returned from treacherous sea travel. Look too at the sophisticated and careful chasing that details St. Nicholas’ robes, the clearly readable text, a shortened version of Mark 6:34, when Jesus arrived by boat to preach—“At that time, when he came out, saw much people, and he began to teach them many things.
