large and early painting done on wood panel dating most likely dating to the 16th or 17th century. The painting depicts Mary holding her son with tears streaming down her face. The detail in the work is superb and displays very well. The painting is done on a wood panel which has been reinforced on the back many years ago due to curving and shrinking with age typical of these early wood panels. The panel itself measures about 26 x 20 inches and has been placed in an cathedral style frame. On the back of the panel is an old label which has "Pieta, Quentin Massys, Flemish, 16th century, Panel 26x20 inches". This was possibly cut out from an old auction catalog. Overall the painting appears to be in very good condition. There are a couple tight age cracks in the wood and some minor scratching to the paint around the edge. It appears to have an old varnish on it of some type and could certainly use a good cleaning.
