George Nakashima "Origins" Modern Mid-Century--"Long Boy" 12-Drawer Dresser with Mirror
I grew up with my parents’ George Nakashima furniture, so it almost feels like it’s family. Unfortunately, the furniture is just too big for my New York apartment and I want to sell it to someone who will appreciate it as much as we have.
This is a 1962 George Nakashima "Origins" Widdicomb 12-drawer dresser with attached mirror. Stamped "SUNDRA".
"To win over the public, Nakashima personally selected particularly beautiful woods including East Indian Laurel, Carpathian Elm, Black Walnut and Rosewood. For the Laurel he developed a unique finish called 'Sundra' meaning 'thing of beauty'. The Sundra stamp found on many pieces has led to the line being referred to (erroneously) as the Sundra collection. While not as collectible as pieces from Nakashima's studio, Widdicomb-Mueller's craftsmen handmade the line with the same techniques specified by the designer himself and it is logical to assume Nakashima oversaw pre-production to guarantee accuracy and quality."
Nakashima, born in Spokane, Washington in 1905, studied Forestry and Architecture. His love of wood and his instinctive feeling about the right way to handle materials sparked his decision to start making furniture.
His plans were interrupted when he and his family were interned at a World War II relocation camp. During this time he continued to hone his trade by working in the camp with a Japanese-trained carpenter. The family was released in 1943 and resettled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where Nakashima built his shop.
By 1949 he was established as a designer and builder of fine, handcrafted furniture. He has never advertised nor sought publicity, yet demand for his furniture has increased. This Interest has only blossomed since Nakashima’s death in
1990.
The dresser is in its original vintage form. The mirror is in excellent condition. Please reach out to me with any questions.
