It is a Civil War era Powder Horn inscribed with the name John H. Morgan, dated 12 SEPT 1854. I'm listing this for a friend who picked up this awesome piece of History at an auction in north central Ohio several years ago, and it has been stored in a dry smoke free environment ever since. He sent the Powder Horn to the Ohio Historical Society, and also to an auction house in Cincinnati Ohio to be authenticated. Both places felt that the Powder Horn was from the Civil War era, but neither could confirm that it actually belonged to John Hunt Morgan who lead the Morgan's Raid. Powder Horn is 16 inches long, leather shoulder strap is 49 inches long and powder measuring horn tip leather string strap is 20 inches long. Horn overall condition is excellent especially for being over 150 years old according to the date inscribed on the horn. There is an eagle scratched into the horn with the words E PLURBUS UNIM inscribed in the banner above the eagle with the name JOHN H. MORGAN 12 SEPT 1854 scratched in the horn under the eagle. The Phrase: " STEAL NOT THIS HORN FOR FEAR OF SHAME FOR ON IT IS ITS OWNERS NAME" is inscribed to the left of the Eagle and above the eagle is inscribed "THE GUN AND I AND OUR BROTHER BALL IN ANY FIGHT WE EQAL ALL". This is the actual spelling of EQAL. There is a crescent moon with a face in it to the right of the Eagle. The butt end of the horn has a wooden cap with leather trim, and the powder hole stopper appears to be wood wrapped in leather. Leather shoulder strap shows wear with crack lines but is still solid and in tact. There is even a tiny bit of powder still in the horn.
