Russian Hallmarks * Circa 1890s
This unusual solid silver thimble has a beautiful engraved and chased band featuring a scrolling floral design on a textured ground. It is set with a carnelian stone top with dimpled indentations. What's unusual is that it has a Russian silver hallmark. The 84 zolotnik mark indicates 875/1000 pure silver. The thimble style looks German though it's unusually high quality and lightly gilded. The Russian mark is the only one it has. I looked in all of my books to see if it could be an import mark, but I couldn't find an example of one.
The condition is mint with no damage at all to the silver or the stone top. It's about an American size 7 (14.5 mm diameter opening) and is gilded inside. The cartouche has not been engraved or personalized.
